Late Summer Nature Journaling
We tend to think that not much blooms in the late summer months. In the southwest we all know it’s the second spring. In the Pacific Northwest it’s the dry season and fire season. We dodged smoke thus far from the fires nearby and keep our eyes open for late season flowers. My local park still abounds in flowers.
August had me scoping out invasive plants that were in bloom: knapweed and common Mullen. September, rabbit brush and sage brush. Check out the videos, then get out and do your own nature journaling records of what is in bloom in your neck of the woods!
To me, late August and September are the yellow flower season, when the Chamisa or Rabbit Brush bursts forth in all of its yellow glory. At the park across the street from my house there are two kinds of rabbit brush along with sage brush that is blooming. Sage brush is only found in the great basin, Bend sits at the western edge of this huge area. I love the smell of sage brush after a good hard rain. But then anywhere dry smells amazing after a good thunderstorm.
