Art Supplies

The other day I had a revelation about purchasing art supplies, especially when you are delving into a new medium. I found an artist via Instagram and was inspired by her random abstract work done with bright acrylic paints. https://rositonaco.com/work/sketchbook

I wanted to make paintings like her! I love the way she uses bright colors to create lively work. Learning to paint as someone who inspires you will help you refine your style of art. In addition, it will increase your knowledge of how materials work and what it takes to create specific looks.

I have a lot of acrylic paint of all kinds, but nothing like what this artist is using. My stash contained lots of pastels and Golden intense colors. Off to Michaels I went, and spend $12 to purchase a set of the basic craft acrylic paints in the brights palette. Very satisfying!

But do I paint like her? No. Does my work look like hers? Nope, but that is ok. I scratched that itch and have been having fun with the bright colors. I will continue to explore the bright paints and see what I come up with. Plus, these inexpensive acrylics will do well for gel plate printing, art journaling and many other things. A nice complement to the pastel acrylics that I have lots of.

Allow yourself to purchase new art materials that will feed your soul and inspire you to do work. Do get supplies that you will use rather than just store. If you have stored the supplies, equipment, etc for more than a year and not used them, it is time for it to go. Knowing that the majority of you all are like me and sort of collect art supplies, keep them up to date and fresh. Donate or sell the older supplies. Keep the stash to a minimum! It will free up your art.
