Natural Light for Creativity
Not an Ott Light, but the sun!
More and more we are hearing about the need to get outside and expose ourselves to some sun first thing in the morning. Don’t look directly at the sun, rather, bask in the sunlight. As we roll into summer, this will be so much easier to do. Have your morning coffee outside, even if it’s still chilly.
Why the sunlight? I am pulling this info from an email I received by Calley Means. “We have photoreceptors (light sensitive cells) in our retinas that receive, are stimulated by, and react to a particle of sunlight. When photons enter the eye, it helps regulate stress, energy levels, and hunger for the day. “
The amount of light we are exposed to outside is 116 times more than inside with artificial light. Sitting under a tree, we are exposed to 50 times more light than inside. Remember that until about 150 years ago, light at night was very expensive and either candle or whale oil. For nearly all of human history until recently, we have had no light to the eyes once the sun went down and during the day, more than we get now!
Again from Calley Means: “If you put any animal in a cage with processed food and low sunlight, they will very quickly go crazy. I am increasingly beginning to think this is happening to us at scale.”
Sort of makes sense that we are conducting a very warped experiment on ourselves. Step out of the experiment and get some sunlight, even on cloudy days, every day! Improve your health and brain function by getting outside for a sunlight break.
